ODay 34 Stern Seats

posted 10-07-2008 by J.B. Dyer

This was really a simple project. I took a piece of cardboard to the boat and after a series of adjustments arrived at a pattern that would fit the contours of the rails and avoid the framework for the bimini and the arch. Later tracing the pattern off on starboard, cutting it out with a saber saw, smoothing the edges with a belt sander, and then routing the edges. If you will notice, the foot rests on the seat behind the propane locker. This enables the opening of the locker without removing the seat.

All stainless hardware was obtained from a marine supply. The rubber feet were obtained at a local pharmacy in the walking aids section. The cup holders were made with nylon webbing sewn at the cross and secured to the bottom with stainless screws and finishing washers.

Bottom view, starboard.

You will notice starboard fixtures on the top rail. This was an after thought. Upon installation and use, it was very evident after leaning against the top railing that I needed a back rest. These rests were made with spare starboard that I happened to have. This installation makes for very comfortable seating.

Port Side Rear

Not much to say here.

This will give you an overall idea of what this looks like. Both seats are close enough to the wheel to helm the boat. I also replaced the wood on the boarding ladder with starboard as the constant exposure to the weather and water kept me busy refinishing the steps.
