Oday 222 - Niagara

Niagara is a beautiful 1985 Oday 222 docked in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. I consider myself very lucky that my first real sailboat is this incredible sailing craft. It is lovely to look at, has quality build features everywhere and sails and motors great. It is 31 years old but looks surprising current and is in excellent condition. I noticed that the still produced Precision 23 is almost a duplicate of the Oday 222. This Niagara is named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perrys second flagship at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Commodore Perrys first ship, the Lawrence, was riddled with cannon and was sinking. He decided to transfer his flagship to the Niagara taking the first flagships Dont Give up the Ship flag. As he and members of his crew were rowing to the Niagara, they were under constant fire, but they made it and hoisted the flag. In a short time, the tide of battle turned and Commodore Perry was able to send out his famous message. We have met the enemy and they are ours, This is one of the most important naval victories in American history and ensured that most of the Great Lakes would be in American hands. I am a history buff and having grown up near the site of the battle and also having lived in Niagara Fall, I thought the name was a perfect fit. My Niagara proudly flies a small Dont give up the Ship. flag.
