Windlass on ODay 37

posted 10-07-2008 by Peter J. Brennan

The windlass was installed on top of the deck anchor locker. I cut the lid in two and solidly bolted and epoxied half of it down, then mounted the windlass on that half. The after half lid can be opened and stuff can still be stored in the locker. A bulkhead was installed to form a chain locker under the V-berth and holes were cut in the bottom of the deck locker and forward of the V-berth to allow the chain to fall from the windlass to the chain locker. This was the working sketch with measurements.

Sketch of windlass installation

Here we see the windlass atop the deck locker, two deck switches alongside. Note the new position of the hinges and a latch to starboard, allowing continued use of the locker. Forward half of locker lid is securely bolted and epoxied in place. Sorry about the shore power cord -- should have moved it out of the way. Note bronze-framed glass deadlights that replace the leaky plastic OEM deadlights.

Windlass overall view.

Here we see the plywood backing on the forward half of the locker lid, the windlass motor and the inside of the locker with the aft half of the lid open. Note the chain going down through the hole cut in the bottom of the locker. A lunch hook with 200 feet of rode, a washdown hose and a rope pennant normally reside in here. A gasket surrounds the open area and may be seen on top of the epoxy-sealed wood.

Inside the locker.

The chain falls just forward of the V-berth through a hole cut ahead of that wood bulkhead. Bottom of the deck locker is at top of photo. The white fixtures on either side are, port, twine-wrapped washdown hose and, starboard, twine-wrapped 1/0 power cables and control wiring. The washdown pump is installed on the aft bulkhead under the V-berth and connected to the forward head water intake sea cock.

Under the deck.

I cut to shape and epoxied in place a small bulkhead to confine the chain to the forward part of the space under the V-berth. The rode consists of 150 feet of chain and 250 feet of rope. The rope stays on the aft side of the bulkhead and almost never comes out. Note the white control cable and the red and black power cables to starboard. The cables are connected to the starting battery under the galley midships and protected with a 100 amp breaker within a couple of feet of the battery. The breaker is shut off when the windlass is not needed, thus keeping lengths of live cable to a minimum. The control cable goes to an up/down switch in the cockpit next to the wheel. Thus the windlass can be operated from the cockpit as well as at the bow.
