MAIN CABIN DOUBLE BERTH

posted 10-07-2008 by Dick Straubel

I am 64 tall and now weight about 250 lbs. Spent most of my boating life squeezing into small cabins and berths. Enough! One reason I bought ODay 25 is because it gives me a bit of elbow room. Needed a comfortable double berth to go with it. The mattress consists of two pieces of 2 X 8 by 6 high density foam. Wife made covers from sheets which may be removed for washing. The foam also fits into the back of our van and serves as a travel mattress for occasional sleeping while traveling.

I cut the 1/2 plywood mattress support pieces in three relatively small pieces that fit in the hanging locker behind the head. Large aft end support piece of varnished oak plywood also fits behind the head.

The mattress support ribs are of 3.5 by .75 oak. They may be stored under the V berth mattresses. (The wood required for this project could be lighter, but we all know that ODay 25s can use a little extra weight down low. Oak boards and oak plywood are just fine. Stowing the pieces under the V berth and behind the head in the hanging locker keep the weight forward when the bed is disassembled. Putting the pieces behind the head on the port side helps balance the weight of the motor.)

The mattress support ribs are supported by this piece that runs from side to side in the cabin. The main weight of the ribs is supported by a piece of oak scabbed on to the back side of the support piece. Recesses are dadoed into the back side of the main support piece to provide vertical support for the support ribs. The main support piece is held in place at the sides by pieces of mahogany with a dado groove down the center.

Note the little brass eye and hook to hold the piece in place. Carpet glued to points of contact with the boat liner keep things in good shape.
