Easy Inexpensive Mast Raising System

posted 06-20-2011 by Greg Haw

Well After going through all the post on raising masts I came up with one of my own, well sorta. Its actually an accumulation of what I have seen and the Oday system.
First I started with a gin poll made of a 2x6 rather then use the boom as Oday does.Pictures 1 and 2. Used 6 eye bolts. 2 near the base to hold a strap to wrap the mast to hold it on the mast.2 near the top one on each side for the baby stays to keep it up right. One on the top face near the top to tie the jib halyard to. And one on the opposite face to hook the main sheet to. When mast was up it was about 8 past the companion way. As you see in the photo my main sheet wasnt long enough and had to add a strap.Tie the jib halyard so it is about 1 longer then it is to the base of the mast. The halyard and sheet need to be put on before you stand the gin pole unless your lot taller then me.
Next I made some plywood gussets to go on the outer shrouds. Made these 6x4 and a 6x2 clamp piece. I show only 2 1/4 bolts but after using it I will add another at the top so shroud can run between them. These are to replace the triangles that oday supplies. And a hole for the straps. Mount them so the bottom s are at the top of the turn buckles.
So adjust the straps so the gin pole is centered and host away with the main sheet. I was surprised how easy it was. Because of having to extend the the main sheet with a strap I could not get quite up all the way. But this was good as it was close enough for me to push it up and have control over how easy it went to the full upright position. I had a pretty good wind letting it down. It took a couple times adjusting the length of the main sheet so the mast leaned enough so the wind didnt blow it back up.
