Modified engine mount

posted 10-07-2008 by Josh Long

I found the way that the motor was mounted to my O22 was unacceptable. There was a large fiberglass wedge on the back of the boat to compensate for the angle of the transom. The problem this created was that the surfaces on which the bolt head and nut rested were at diffrent angles, concentrating all the weight on the inside of the transom to one spot at each bolt. This was causing it to crush the fiberglass.

What I did above was remove everything, take apart the motormount, and cut the lower arm shorter. This compensates for the rake of the transom much better then did that fiberglass wedge. On the inside, I have bolted a two inch thick by two foot by two foot peice of aluminum to back up the motor mount. If this engine wants to leave, its taking the entire transom with it.

Also, in the process of removing the arm, I removed one of the lifting springs. The mount had too much lifting force, and I think it was built for an engine twice this size. It works great now!

Here, the mount is up. You will notice that the lower arm swings in a bit when it gets to the top postion. I had not anticipated this, and would have not cut off as much as I had if I knew it was going to do this. Its not bad, it just makes it hard to lock it into the top position. The stress is pushed more from a vertical position then normal though, so its probably better for transport.
