Double hull leaking badly

posted 09-12-2008 by Woody Mills

After a sail, the space between the floor and bottom would be full of water. I ended up taking the radical approach and ripped out the floor between the seats and the centerboard trunk, leaving a one inch strip alongside each (because the saw would not take it all out anyway). I wanted to create a single hull in this space. I used epoxy mixed with an adhesive filler under the centerboard trunk and seats to reattach them down to the hull. Epoxy has 5 times the bonding strength than fiberglass. Although expensive, it was pretty impressive to use and work with especially in cooler weather giving me an early start to the seasons repair work. For the large floor area I used the cheaper fiberglass resin and 4 layers of mat to fill in this area, and used a pigment in the last 2 layers so I would not need to paint the floor. It was a lot of work but I like a good repair project to keep me busy in the off season.
