Review of the Oday 322 by Don McIlroy

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I don't think there is a better first timers boat  
Gear that's been added I have added a wind instrument and autopilot. Replaced original speakers & radio with new radio/CD/MP3 player. This is a great space saver. I have recorded my favorite 50 CD's onto 4! mp3 cd'S that I leave on the boat.  
Structural or complex improvements  
The boat's best features I looked for a long time and did not find another boat that I and my wife instantly loved the layout of. There are few boats in the 34-35 that match the 322 but I don't think there any in the 32-33ft.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. One of the first things we could not understand the design of was the door to the forward cabin. when you have all the berth boards in there is no way of getting out in the middle of the night without totally dismantling the berth. I solved this by turning the door upside down, took only minor modification. Now the door opens out from the berth, causes no obstruction to the rest of the cabin and no more disturbing of bunkmates in the middle of the night. Replaced negative cable to nav station with larger gauge, I found evidence of heating on the original and I am planning to add radar and refrigeration in the future. I have replaced the lower half of jib furler. After 13 years of use the original CDI unit was full of cracks. The new unit uses an adapter to mate with my older aluminum luff. Later on I can update to the plastic luff and just take out the adapter. Thank you CDI!  
Sailing characterisitcs Like most honest sailboat owners, our travels have been 40% motoring, 30% motorsailing and 30% sailing. I have found the boat to be very predictable and the sail plan to have lots of adjustment to satisfy my lust for speed and my wife's demand for less the 10* of heal. I have helped this situation by installing a defective inclinometer.  
Motoring characterisitcs The original 14/11 prop is a joke. The best cruse is 6 knots on the flat and it drops fast with any kind of sea or wind. I am looking at other alternatives that won't break the bank.
