Review of the Oday 28 by Kevin Silverman

Year built 1979
Location of boat Seattle Wa
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definately.
Gear that's been added Most everything. New ST winches, Running rigging, depth & speed gauges, GPS w/plotter, Beefed up battery banks to a dual bank/2 battery house bank system, added seperate house & starting battery switches with emergency "Jumping" ability, added Link 10 house bank monitor (Most cool), and new multi-stage "smart charger". Added a direct vent propane heater.
Structural or complex improvements New Yanmar 2GM, Relocated a traveler on cabin top, Dodger, increased holding tank size (not an easy job), increase fuel tank to 20 gallons,Roller Furling & FB Main, Pulled Mast & re-wired the AC/DC panels, spreader lights & auto-pilot.
The boat's best features Tacks on a dime, easy to handle by my wife & I. Very roomy down below. Fun to sail for an afternoon & great for weeks at a time in the San Juan Islands.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The ground tackle is a frustration. There's no room to set up a bow roller for the anchor, so I hang it off the rail. It invaribly want to cause damage to the deck when I haul up the chain. This summer I'm going to relocate the port/starbord lights on the pushpit & have a stainless deckplate built with welded bow-roller & cleats. While I'm at it, I'll have a new stern rail made with seats & a fold down ladder for better access to the dinghy.
Sailing characterisitcs Winds from 10-25 knots...mostly inside the protected waters of the Puget Sound. We spend alot of time in the San Juans and plan a trip up the inside pass to SE Alaska.
Motoring characterisitcs Walks a bit in reverse...not as bad after I put the new engine with a 3-blade prop on her. After I got used to it, I moored with it in mind & it really helped get out in reverse to "use" the walk to my advantage. The Yanmar 2GM is bullet proof. It runs strong & long...using very little fuel.
Liveability It would be nice to have a head with a door...and a table. Ours was removed when we got her, due to the solid fuel stove mounted on her bulkhead. I replaced it with propane. But, a table would be nice.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sailboats at Shilshole were great.
Other comments Great boat...we love ours. Were planning to go to a 36 something or other later...but I think now we've decided that for the 2 of us, the O'Day 28 is perfect.
