Review of the Oday 27 by Clint

Liveaboard? Yes  
Owner bought the boat in 1998  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes due to the merits of the design, however as a live aboard, I would rather have a 30.  
Gear that's been added When purchased, the boat did not have anything other than the factory gear. 2 extra cabin top winches added and all rigging brought back to cabin. Foresail winches upgraded to larger size. Stainless mastplate at cabin top fabricated to allow for multiple block placement and reinforce design. Anchor located to bow extension. Electronics added - GPS, VHF, and depth sounder. Harken furling, etc, etc. The boat is now fully equiped for cruising and racing.  
Structural or complex improvements Major structural improvements. Due to design flaws and previous owners drilling deck holes, the core had become soft. The entire decks have been re-cored with end grain balsa and all mountain plates and areas reinforced with epoxy and stainless back plates. All rigging and turnbuckles upgraded in size. Chain plates upgraded in size - longer and more bolts in bulkhead. Mast step area re-done with fibreglassed reinforced epoxy and new 1/4" thick stainless mast plate, with welded side "wings" through bolted to mast compression post. Wings allow for blocks to be secured to plate, rather than deck type fittings. Bulk heads replaced. Mast rigging switched to all rope, new shive design and mast top. Interior woodwork improvements - side cabinets for storages, chart station and cabinets behind head.  
The boat's best features Ease of sailer her. Responsive in most wind conditions, roomy for the size. Very well built boat (except for deck and stanchion mounts).  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Deck (as previously stated) (fixed) Rigging was undersized (fixed) - for rough weather conditions. Stanchion fittings (fixed)  
Sailing characterisitcs Up to 15 knots - the boat responds well - although weather helm gets quite noticable as wind increases. 15 knots upwards - I find that the the boat is a little light - but with the correct reefing, she can still sail in comfort, with lots of speed. The boat can exceed hull speed down wind quite easilly. Sail shape is crutial and with some mast bending and tuning - the boat is very fast. Reefing the main is difficult when sailing solo, but this has been solved with some new gear placement.  
Motoring characterisitcs Good. I switched from the atomic four to a Honda four stroke. Very efficient. The mount is very strong and can be tuned for its height. Easily motors at hull speed without any vibration.  
Liveability Good for two years - after this I started to go crazy. I installed shore power, 12/110 volt refrigeration, 110/propane heat. Not much in the way of condensation. V-berth a little tight, but quarter berth is great.

Other comments Nice boats for the size - good value, especially when compared to other "production" boats like the Catalina 27 (much cheaper and not as well finished).
