If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely--love this boat
Gear that's been added Shorepower; TLC. Previous owner: Autohelm bidata and wind. Just installed a beautiful brass ship's bell that looks great on the port bulkhead.
Structural or complex improvements The previous owner had two trolling motors rigged through the hull--seriously. I had the 1' X 1' hole in the hull patched up and had an outboard installed as part of the deal.
The boat's best features I can stay out when the winds go beyond 20mph as other boats are heading in; she is very stable in good winds--feels safe. Good room inside for a 25 footer.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Is there really a need for a second sink/vanity? Had to replace the rudder recently as it broke in two below waterline on a beam reach in 15mph winds--Keystone Cop recovery. After I pulled what was left of it out I found that it had been repaired before using epoxy. The ODAY guy in Mass sent me a perfect replica ($650). Can't get Autohelm wind to work but I think it may be just a loose connection somewhere. Don't see a real need for it anyway.
Sailing characterisitcs Heavy stable boat that makes one feel safe and confident. Had her out in some really good blows with no problems except for my novice mistakes. Actually I prefer to take her out when conditions are heavy--more fun/exitement. 150 furler makes all the difference. She does not appear to have much weatherhelm, which I find suprising. In the groove I have let go the tiller and she keeps the course. Gets to hull speed easily enough. Excellent downwind.
Motoring characterisitcs 7.5 Sailmaster OB does the job nicely.
Liveability I have a wife and 4 kids so I haven't tried it yet. I may attempt with some of them when it cools down a little. She will sleep all of us, but I'm afraid divorce proceedings and foster home assignments would soon follow. I think three could stay on board but that portapotty thing would be the real decider.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Chris Rooke of Rooke Sails Memphis. Honest, fair, genuine dealer that I would have no hesitation in recommending.
Other comments I love this boat. She is 25 years old and thinks she is still about 10 years old. I just moved up from a Hobie 18 and I have this site to thank for helping me make the decision to buy an O'Day 25.
