Review of the Oday 25 by Bill Miller

Year built 1978
Location of boat Canandaigua, New York
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, My family and I have been very pleased with this boat. We sailed a sunfish for 10 years, always admiring the ODay's anchored at the shallow end of the lake. Now we enjoy the sailing and the swimming in shallow water (thanks to the shoal keel)
Gear that's been added Boating projects I live for!! All low cost home brew I have added a washdown pump system, autohelm(yeh I had to get this for Christmas), hatchway screens, solor battery charging, expanded scale Voltage/Current monitoring system (lake temperature to follow this fall), 9/12 cockpit awning, cabin stereo.
Structural or complex improvements No, The boat has held up very well. I service the 9.9 HP Johnson outboard each winter myself
The boat's best features Very safe, stable boat. Simple to use and take care of. Sails very well, even the autohelm holds the boat well in wind gusts taking the heel to 25 -30 degrees.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Replaced the kitchen pump faucet, some minor chips needed to be filled. Crack in Rudder bottom needed cleaning and drying out and filling.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails very well, even the autohelm holds the boat well in wind gusts taking the heel to 25 -30 degrees. GPS has registered 7 knots at peak
Motoring characterisitcs Outboard is a little awkward when leaving and returning into slip. Alot of freeboard to catch the wind when docking. I always have an anchor ready to deploy in any close areas under power in the event that the motor stalls and will not restart. Bouy mooring is better, but the convienence of the slip 1 mile from my home is just too nice.
Liveability Two have slept very comforability onboard, seating both below and in cockpit is good. When anchored in the shallows on a sunny afternoon, the awning provides a cool place for family (including the grandchildren (now 6 months and 1 month old) to relax and sleep.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Simple, honest, open, best investment I ever made.
Other comments Would like to eventually move it to Lake Ontario and expand the opportunity. Convienence of access to the boat is very important.
