Review of the Oday 23 by Mike Woodworth

Year built 1980
Location of boat Oconto,WI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I am very happy with this boat. It is my first boat and I am interested in learning to sail.
Gear that's been added A sound system, an extra anchor and rode and I made a head sail tie-down.
Structural or complex improvements none so far.
The boat's best features I like the shallow draft. It is spacious for a 23'-er. It is easy to trailer and set up. I like the cockpit enclosure.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I've had problems with the life lines. Also I've noticed that it rolls at anchor. The lines in the mast tend to make noise at anchor. The centerboard seems to slap around in the housing making noise.
Sailing characterisitcs I've only sailed this boat so I don't have any experience with other boats. I am extremely happy with my O'Day.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 8hp mariner outboard. It seems to go quite well but would like to move up to a 9 or 10 hp.
Liveability It's fairly livable for one person. I've stayed on it for four weeks straight and was quite comfortable. I also have a full cockpit enclosure which adds to liveability.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a private owner.
Other comments In general I am very happy with the boat. I would also like to get more information on other Oday 23' and owners as I am a first time sailor. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
