Review of the Oday 23 by Larry Merz

Location of boat Westport,Ct
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, Definitely
Gear that's been added New Motor Mount
Structural or complex improvements Replaced Teak Bulkhead which had rotted. A long tediuos job, but not that difficult. Replaced Standing Rigging. Last owners installed CDI Furler and new UK Sails. Nice...
The boat's best features Beautiful, roomy interior for a 23. Ease of sailing, very stable and a good solid build with quality gelcoat. Good size cockpit and nice teak topsides. Overall a very classic looking boat...
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Chainplate design was made to leak. You must regularly caulk chainplates to prevent leaking/damage to bulkheads. But its a 5 minute job, no big deal.
Sailing characterisitcs Nice! We had a 1984 222 which was a little tender. I can solo in comfort and confidence. Decent upwind performance.
Motoring characterisitcs We have a 9.9 Johnson Sailmaster. It provides plenty of power.
Liveability Occasional weekends are OK for two people.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Great quality build, Great looking boat, a Pleasure to sail. After 20 years Gelcoat still polishes and waxes to a beautful shiny finish.
