Review of the Oday 23 by Peter Sai-Ngarm

Year built 1978
Location of boat San Francisco
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2017
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, for the learning experience and if I wanted to save money compared to keeping it in a marina
Gear that's been added Lots. Roller furling, autopilot, sail covers, new rigging, lazy jacks, lighting, electric engine, solar, flopper stopper, tablet mount for navigation, genoa pole, windex, mast lights, 135% genoa, larger main sail with 3 reef points, reefs 1 and 2 are single line. I can reef the main in 30 seconds
Structural or complex improvements Recored deck roof, solar, new bulkhead, removed old sink and made a folding sink, extra shrouds, bonded hull pan to liner in cockpit, by keel, and amidships, put backing plates behind hull to deck joint. All of this considerably stiffened the feel of the boat in waves.
The boat's best features Shoal draft, trailerability for maintenance, cheap, good looking, overall easy to manage
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Launching it is a bit of an ordeal, I have to disconnect the trailer from my truck at the waters edge, then lower it using a tow-haul strap. Raising the mast takes real diligence as well.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is lively and will not sail itself; it needs a lot of helm input. Autopilot is mandatory for solo sailing in my opinion. Ive sailed in dead calm up to 35 knots. Does not sail well over 20 knots, not worth sailing over 25, and thats will 3 reefs in the main. Possible but slow. Love 8-14 knots (keep in mind I have a 135% genoa).
Motoring characterisitcs motors great!
Liveability I would consider opening up and reinforcing the bulkheads to make the boat more open. 5 of headroom so youll be stooped over. Comfortable sleeping in main cabin, vberth a bit small
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) drmarine is great!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments If you want a boat that can be trailered then this boat is great. If you want to launch it every weekend, get something smaller. Theyre older but I think worth restoring or maintaining.
