Review of the Oday 222 by Jeff/Mary Bruffett

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Most definitely! We were looking for a clean, comfortable, reliable boat to sail/spend weekends at the lake...One of us wanted a waterfront cabin, the other wanted a gentler boat.(former power boat owners), so it seems that both requirements are met with this boat. We encountered many "dogs" while on our search for this sweet boat. She seems much roomier and accomodating than her size would otherwise indicate. Although she was bought as "ready to sail", we have encountered many repairs/upgrades to bring her up to "ship shape".  
Gear that's been added Yes, we added lifeline covers, a BBQ grill, mainsail and tiller handle covers, AM/FM/CD stereo, replaced VHF radio, replaced wiring panel/fuse block and wiring, added battery charger, upgraded to 8 HP motor on better adjustable OB motor mount. Plan to repair/replace non working Depth/Knot meters.  
Structural or complex improvements Bottom Job... Only about 5 blisters that needed sanded and filled...Sanded off the old ablative and epoxy paint, applied new VC Tar epoxy under coating on bottom, CB, and Rudder. Then 3-4 coats of VC17 (Red) over that. The former owners were BLEACH fanatics, so the teak was in SAD shape...This boat has turned out beautifully!! We also added some rollers to the center of her trailer; what a difference that made...  
The boat's best features Ease of handling, feeling the sails/wind..She has been a great first sailor to learn with...She is also a great place to camp overnight. We are still using her into Nov, with a dock hookup to shore power electric for heat. Warm weather is best, with screens over the hatches.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Older electrical devices like Depth, Knot, some lighting, etc. Otherwise boat has been quite sound.  
Sailing characterisitcs Still learning...She LOVES to sail at 15 degrees close hauled..what a great feeling, the boat seems to come alive! She seems to "like" the on wind attitude better than Off wind... Also like the shoal draft, so we can get close to shore.  
Motoring characterisitcs Much motoring on inland lakes...variable/sometimes weak or gusty winds...we have early 90's 8 HP Johnson OB motor, with F/N/R...very handy and purrrrs like a cat. Pleany of Power! The 4 HP sailmaster F/N that came with the boat was a pain in the ***.  
Liveability Weekends for 2 during cool weather, more folks if summer. This is a floating camper at the most basic. We have had a lot of fun with her for a small investment, compared to owning a power boat, camper, campground fees, etc....But too close quarters for more than 2 people for more than a few days....

Other comments She has been a great boat to learn to sail on. Much to learn yet, and wish we'd started sailing earlier...Now I just wish she were about 28 ft long, with an enclosed head and a shower!!! Sailing sure gets in your blood!
