Review of the Oday 222 by Harry McHarg

Year built 1986
Location of boat Pembroke,Bermuda
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes,I have enjoyed sailing my 222 for 16 plus years, and hope to do so for many more.
Gear that's been added 150% genoa for lighter winds, cunningham for the main to take out the normal large draft .Added a stern rail, for aid in getting out of the water,am planning to modify this shortly.aft leading main halyard.Masthead antenna with internal mast lead in cable, pressure water to sink and hand spray at rear of cockpit,vhf,d/s,knotmeter.Mounted aux.whip antenna on stern rail, replaced original stern light and mounted it on stern rail.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Large cockpit,great storage space for a 22 footer,wide compaionway,lifting centerboard.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder tips up very easily, added a ring on the after end of rudder, boat hook fits ring to push it back down.
Sailing characterisitcs the 222 sails well, rounds up nicely if overpowered, easily singlehandled.
Motoring characterisitcs On my second 8 h.p.long shaft Johnson,6 knots with the keel up and a clean bottom.Stops and reverses very well.
Liveability Two people are the most I would recommend for weekending, any more would have to be very, very good friends!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought from a dealer, was very thorough by securing many extras when purchased.
Other comments I would highly recommend the 222 for its looks, sailability and storage.
