Review of the Oday 222 by Lee Walis

Year built 1987
Location of boat Hudson River
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely!
Gear that's been added GPS, Depth Finder, 4 Speaker CD/Stereo, VHF, Compass, Inclinometer, Motor Bracket, Custom A-Frame Mast Raising System.
Structural or complex improvements None needed.
The boat's best features Very easy to trailer. Easy to rig. Very well balanced. Cabin is very spacious for a boat this size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The furler is pretty flimsy. A reefing furler is my next upgrade.
Sailing characterisitcs This boat points extremely well. Handles sloppy seas with ease. A little wet, but that's part of the fun. Seems happiest at 20 degree heel.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 7.5hp and can make hull speed. The hudson can get pretty snotty when the wind opposes the tide. The 222 motors in these conditions with no problem.
Liveability Overnighters are fine. Opted not to install a stove. I think the cabin is a bit small for this.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments I am a powerboater convert and I love my 222. I plan on keeping her a very long time. I almost bought a Macgregor motor sailer. The quality of the O'Day 222 is hard to beat.
