Review of the Oday 222 by Austin Bell

Year built 1987
Location of boat Smithville, Missouri
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely
Gear that's been added Autopilot, Kenwood CD player, two Bose speakers. New battery. Magma propane grill.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet. Need to paint the hull eventually, but need to learn how first.
The boat's best features Easy to learn to sail on. Very forgiving boat. Easy to rig the sails. Pretty quick little boat. Comfortable to sail and sleep on. We didn't know what we were doing when we bought her, but found the O'Day 222 a perfect learner.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Jib furler. Cockpit drain. Removable table designed for the cockpit and cabin is decidedly flimsy.
Sailing characterisitcs As a beginner, we've sailed it in almost every weather condition expected in the midwest. Sometimes by accident. Storms, wind, rain, etc. Ideal sailing is in about 10 knots of wind. She goes smooth..
Motoring characterisitcs Moves great with a 10 horsepower motor.
Liveability Plan on taking it down the Missouri river in the Fall of 2006 with two people on board. We've not slept on it for more than a weekend, but so far she's very comfortable and surprisingly roomy for a boat this size.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Any ideas on how to paint the hull while it's on the trailer?
