Review of the Oday 22 by Warren Graumann

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes...I wanted a boat with a fixed keel. In 1972 there were several swing keel types on the market, they all seemed to have problems. Also, i didn't like the idea of a 600 lbs. steel keel slaming back into the boat in case of a knockdown. At the time, my wife  
Gear that's been added 150% Genoa  
Structural or complex improvements Removed the port side table (useless in a 22' boat)  
The boat's best features Very stable..quite seaworthy for a 22' boat. I've been out in 40 kt. winds..mind you, you have your hands full but, she got me home! Great boat for a small family.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have places where the balsa core material has become rotten. I have repaired by injecting the non-expanding type foam insulation into the problem areas. Keep in mind, my boat is 29 years old.....any boat that age that has balsa core material, will have the same problem.  
Sailing characterisitcs Shes not a racer! When I added the genoa, my windward preformance was greatly improved. The boat is a pretty good all-around prefomer. As I stated before "shes not a racer" but, she will get you out and back safely. I single-hand most of the time...no problem.  
Motoring characterisitcs Nothing unusual here. I've found the best power is a two stroke outboard in the 6-8 HP range. The weight of the O/B hanging off the stearn is critical...the lighter the better. I started out with a Johnson 3 HP then a Volvo 9.9 HP and now an Evinrude 6 HP. All worked fine the 6  
Liveability With a wife and two small boys, it was tight, but workable. We took many week long trips with no major problems. When packing for such cruises...look at every item you are planning to take. If you know you need it..take it. If you think you will need it...leave it home!

Other comments I have thought about a bigger boat. But, when I look at the type of sailing I currently due, the O'Oay 22 is just about perfect. Someday maybe a bigger boat, not now.
