Review of the Oday 22 by Keith Dellsperger

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, This is a great little boat to learn how to sail and to sharpen technigues. It is large enough to take guest out for the day but not for the weekend. This boat is quite stable in 25 knt winds but slow on any reach 6knts and below. She handles wonderfully on a beam reach and reaches top speed close hauled during 12 to 15 knt winds. I have reached 6knts in 15 knt winds with a 130% jib. It is well constructed and designed. The cockpit is quite large for a boat this size that has the amount of berths in the cabin. I take a maximum of four people including myself which allows every one a comfortable place on the boat. If you have back problems expect to lean over alot while in the cabin.  
Gear that's been added Yes, I have added a manual head complete with holding tank, through hull, and "Y" valve, but expect to struggle a little to use it. I have also added an extra deep cycle batter complete with battery switch and three 12volt outlets- Added an extra electrical panel complete with switches for the outlets as well as an ampere meter to momitor the batteries. Added a 12v bilge pump in the starboard aft storage that is manually operated by the new panel switch.  
Structural or complex improvements The originall rudder was replaced when it fell apart with a solid plate aluminum rudder manufactured by a local machine shop using the old rudder as a template. Made new hatch covers out of 1/2" teak plywood.  
The boat's best features The traditional Sailboat lines, and the fiberglass work. This 1978 has not been maintained to the highest degree possible until I purchase it. The only thing I had to do to make this boat look new was compounding and polishing the glass and refinishing the teak on the deck. The interior is still in great shape.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had leaks from every lifeline stanchion. In order to access the bolts to remove and reseat, I had to cut the interior side decks. I was not happy about this but there was no other way. The stern rain also had to be reseated and access on the port side aft rail is quite limited with the access provided in the fuel holding bay.  
Sailing characterisitcs No, wind- Dead in the water Light winds- Barely moving and wishing for more wind. Moderate winds- Happy and calm 15 to 25 knots- exillerated. Storm conditions- In this boat I stear close to the wind and use the storm jib only no main, or I anchor with the bow automaticaly turning straight into the wind. Safest thing to do in a boat this size when you get caught out there and i have been caught several times.  
Motoring characterisitcs MY Oday 22 has the original Johnson 6HP Sailmaster outboard auxillary. Very easy to maintain and starts with two to three pulls normally when cold, one pull when warmed. It's enough to get you in when auxillary power is needed and to navigate the marina. I try to use it only in the harbor.  
Liveability OK for a solo sailor, but extremely tight for a weekend with two people on board. Doesn't have all the comforts of a larger boat such as A/C- Refrigeration or a shower. But if you don't mind roughing it a little go for it.

Other comments It's the prettiest little boat in the Marina and I am complimented all the time on it. I have had several offers to buy her for more money than what I paid for her.
