Review of the Oday 22 by jeff mckinley

Structural or complex improvements since i'm powered with a yamaha 9.9 4-stroke (yes it's heavy, but reliable) i had to beef up the outboard mount considerably. the aluminum tubing was inserted with a solid aluminum cylinder first. then to distribute stress i boxed in the motor mounting plate on both sides running back to the stern with 1/4" plate aluminum and bolted using plywood plate s inside. no more motor dunk worries and the big two cylinder will take me to canada and back. in a freak accident caused by being waked by a 60 foot boat, my bottom gudgeon was ripped out as the tiller was slammed into the bottom. as you know, the damage was below the waterline. we were sinking. after repairing the hull i wanted to eliminate this this possibility in the future so i mounted both gudgeons on a nicely shaped vertical 1/4" thick aluminum plate, looks sharp! no holes below waterline.  
The boat's best features it's easy to sail, very forgiving for beginners and quite stout in heavy weather. we got caught offshore between inlets in so. fla. as east winds at 20 turned into a howling noreaster at 35+ with 7-8' seas. she got us home.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. the plywood parts deteriorate and need to be replaced every 25-30 years  
Sailing characterisitcs she has a relatively slow hull speed due to her size but then again it's not a racer is it? when a gust hits she will turn quickly into the wind but i have the shoal keel so i guess the effect is enhanced... it's a tiller deal  
Motoring characterisitcs the shallow draft is probably the best motoring characteristic. i have taken that boat up the tiniest little canals and inland waterways.  
Liveability it's a glorified campsite. most of the time is spent outside. i rigged a tarp up over the cockpit for when i need it. i'm going to make screens for the hatch and gangway. coleman stove, icechest and portapotty. my motor charges the battery so i have a little stereo/radio. longest time aboard was 4 days

Other comments did you know the mast is foamfilled? try replacing the anchor light or radio antennae wiring.
