Review of the Oday 22 by Carl Kleinschmidt

Year built 1978
Location of boat Panama City Beach, Fl
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would regret not doing it.
Gear that's been added Offshore Garelick motor mount. Had to build a new mounting block. Nissan 9.9, 4 stroke long shaft. Really moves the boat along nicely without the noise of a two stroke. Fold up boarding ladder mounted on the port aft quarter just as the hull curves back. Makes for easy boarding not riding the pitch from the stern. Bow pulpit anchor holder Portable Piranha 1 fishfinder. This thing works great. Magellan handheld GPS. Ritchie Voyager compass.
Structural or complex improvements Removed the sink area. Allows room for a large cooler. New wood for the V berth. I must mention the cockpit cushions Tracy made. They match the color of the hull and sail covers which are green. Replaced the jib sheat cleats with camcleats. Built new main hatch. Green to match. Hiking stick on tiller.
The boat's best features Shoal draft keel. We have a nice bay system here. Tracy likes to cut the corners close. Between the GPS and the fishfinder, we can get very close to shore.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I think the boat was built very well. Down the road I want to get a bigger boat, but I sure don't want to part with this one.
Sailing characterisitcs She will find her head and sail on her own, but only in the right conditions. She sails a little heavy to weather. But this just adds to some fun sailing.
Motoring characterisitcs With the 9.9, she moves along very well.
Liveability She's a day sailer. Weekends are for adventure. But for two people she's very accomodating.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments My Dad bought the boat in 85'. I used to sail her when I was a kid. She has sat through several hurricanes. Even sank in her slip once from one.(the concrete piling got her stern.) Totally refitted. She sat idle for about 9 years in a fresh water creek off the intercoastal. I got her from my Dad in 2002 and brought her back to the bay. The major work Tracy and I did was cleaning her topsides from sitting for so long. I had to do some work on the forward stay where it was beginning to come away from the deck. This is also when I added the new motor, motor mount and block. We had an uneventful 10 hour motor from the creek to her present location. I'm very impressed with the hull integrity after sitting in the water for so long with no upkeep. Her bottom growth didn't begin until I put back into the saltwater. But I clean her bottom every weekend. (no trailer) My next projects will be to completely rework her electrical system. Replace a section of the rub rail. Clean and re-seal all windows and deck mounts. This winter we'll have her hauled and do a bottom job on her. Down the road I'll replace the halyards and run them to the cockpit.
