Review of the Oday 22 by Mike C

Year built 1973
Location of boat Hudson River NY
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Most definately....I will be very sad when I have to sell her...a GREAT first boat for me.
Gear that's been added My first year, I had to replace a broken mast, so I added new halyards, shackles, cleats, wiring in the mast for steaming/spreader lights. New teak handrails, new mainsail cover, new bulkhead compass. My second year I installed a new Nissan 4 stroke Outboard, Garhauer Boom Vang, Garhauer Mainsheet 4:1 purchase system with a new traveller system, cabin lights, all new running lights, battery holder, fuse panel, master on/off switch for the battery, internal wiring for all the electrical equiptment Next year I will add new roller furling (CDI) and new headsail.
Structural or complex improvements I had deck rot under the mast tabernackle caused I believe by the screws that were holding the tabernackle. I removed the rot, strengthened the deck, rebed the tabernackle with Stainless bolts through the deck into the cabin. I added new larger chainplates for the standing rigging (which I am replacing this off season)
The boat's best features She is easy to sail. Sturdy in heavy wind and can take a beating. Shoal keel lets me get in close to anything I want to.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mainsheet system (both the triangle plate on the backstay and the older 3 point block system) both are not conducive to 1. space in the cockpit 2. mainsail trim. I have gotten rid of this system and installed my own style traveller on the transom which has worked marvelously. The screws holding the tabernackle allow water to seep into the coring, causing rot. After 30 years, the window caulking has disentigrated and the hatchboards are about done too.
Sailing characterisitcs fights through a chop fine. The boat experiences a bit of weather helm in a strong gust, but that helps. With the sails trimmed well, I can let go of the tiller and she will sail herself.
Motoring characterisitcs with a new outboard (6hp is all you need to get to hull speed) she does hull speed at 3/4 throttle. My only complaint in the 1973 model is that there is no fuel locker. The gas tank sits on the cockpit floor. Later models have a fuel locker.
Liveability With no standing headroom and a tight fit into the porta-potti it wouldn't be the boat I take on a month long voyage, but for 2 people (who love each other very very very very much) you can go on a week long cruise and not be too bad off.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments O'Day makes a great, solid, almost indestructable sail boat. My next boat will be a larger O'Day....
