Review of the Oday 22 by Tom Sluka

Year built 1977
Location of boat Green lake, Spicer Mn
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? My previous sailing experience is limited to 2 summers on a 1977 amf sunfish, I feel as though my o-day 22 knows this, and she is being very gentle and forgiving with her new owners ignorance. I cannot imagine a better starter boat. My first time sailing with it my 10 year old son and I sailed right out from shore on her, no problem. Yes I would definately buy again, and I dont know that I will ever sell this boat.
Gear that's been added A 6 horse johnson
Structural or complex improvements just some minor upkeep on the trailer.
The boat's best features Going from a sunfish to this boat is like going from a go-kart to a cadilac, such a dizzying array of features, it would be hard to single out wich i like best. Easy to sail I would have to say.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Everthing on the boat works perfectly fine, and nothing strikes me as being cheap, poorly made or flimsy. Given the fact that I am new to this sailing thing, I am quite conservative, with everything, I dont sail in higher winds, and I do not allow a great deal of sail pressure. I am sure as my experince increases, I will put the boat through more riggerous testing, but i feel quite confident that all things will hold up well. The only complaint is that we have encountered lakes where the launch is not deep enough to put her in due to the shoal keel. No desighn flaw thats just how it is.
Sailing characterisitcs Having only the sunfish to compare to, I am amazed at how little wind you can sail this boat in, and how well it sails into the wind, yes it is slow into the wind but at least it moves. I was never able to get the sunfish to do more than creep into the wind, and that could be lack of sailing skills, but my o-day 22 will move slow and steady into the wind, however every once in awhile its like she says O.K. enough I want to have the wind behind me and she just swings around to go down wind and I cannot seem to steer out of it, so i just come around again and get her pointed up wind again and off we go. I am sure once again this is due to my lack of sailing knowlege.
Motoring characterisitcs I only motor out and in about 100 yards, so i am no great judge of her motoring abilities.
Liveability snug and cozy for 2, tight for 4 but if all you do is sleep in it who cares.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any purchased from private party, the boat sat derilect for 3 years in the tall weeds and shrubbery, he let us take her home and clean it up and sail it before we paid for it. He even knew my extreme lack of sailing experience.
Other comments we are very infatuated with out 0-day 22 she is a little rough on the top side due to baking in the sun for 3 years with no care or cover. We plan for a complete restore this fall back to all original and new condition, right down to the original o-day logo stickers on the side of the boat. I cannot imagine we will sell her antime soon, as we bought it so reasonably, you could never replace it with anything close to what we have for what we invested. WE LOVE IT !
