Review of the Oday 20 by Nick

Year built 1972
Location of boat Minnesota
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? You bet.... Great boat fits my requirements perfectly very easy to trailer and it was built as solid as a rock.
Gear that's been added Added a 2nd grossly oversized anchor, upgraded the spreaders as I thought they were rather week. Made use of a SS fitting from dwyer masts. Adding several cleats as there are never enough. Removed the Sink and stove area as it had never been used an original sticker was still inside the sink and it was all a horrible waste of space. Added a fold down table in its place. Converted the area under the v berth that used to house the toilet into a storage bin. Working on the mast and removing some of the fittings as some of the fasteners were corroding. In particular the aluminum fittings at the end of the spreaders they were literally crumbling dont use tape as a spreader boot!!! Added a boom vang a definite must in high winds.
Structural or complex improvements Just removal of the sink and stove area. Finished with installation of the fold down table to better conserve space.
The boat's best features Built rock solid in the heavy and gusty winds that we often encounter the boat has proven its worth.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I didnt like the stove sink area of course and I have thought about cutting away some of the bulk head to open things up even further however I havent felt like diving into that particular project yet.... Maybe i never will. The forward portion of the starboard cockpit seat has cracked and delaminated. It is going to require a structural repair at some point.
Sailing characterisitcs For such a light boat it performs very well I was afraid that the flat bottom and low draft would mean poor performance and so far it hasnt let me down. Not a racer though however as we get better with it I expect that it will really fly in high winds once we get it to plane out.
Motoring characterisitcs It has a 4 horse on it so not exactly a speed boat but hey I bought it for sailing not pulling water skiers!!!
Liveability I would never be gone for longer then a week..... Better like whoever you are on a trip with.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I paid a little more then I should have... Oh well it happens.
