Review of the Oday Rhodes-19 by Bob

Year built 1968
Location of boat Sandusky Bay, OH
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes!!! Although the boat was given to me with the promise that I would get the boat off their property a.s.a.p. This boat has given me unbelievable amounts of pain and pleasure! Alot of problem solving went into this adventure. Such as finding a used trailer,(not an easy task). I took almost a whole roll of film the day when I saw my R19 for the first time with her mast stepped, the bottom painted, and the hull cleaned and pollished! I was very pleased with myself.
Gear that's been added Yes, I've replaced the sails, new sailcover, brand new Mercury 5hp. motor (longshaft) and motor bracket. I replaced or repaired most of the rigging. Rewired new lites, horn, bildge pump. New safety equipment. Replaced all the lines
Structural or complex improvements Yes. I replaced the ribs using White oak instead of Red oak. Replaced the keelbolts. Made a new rudder and tiller and replaced the bumprail. I inspected the floatation chambers and found all three to be dry and in good working order.
The boat's best features The boat is very easy to work on. I didn't have to spend alot of time removing parts to get to the area that I needed to work on.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. My tiller vibrates in lite to moderate winds. I was told that it might be in my keel, maybe check the keel alignment? My biggest peeve with boat is feeding the mainsail into the mast. Is there a better way?
Sailing characterisitcs She seems to be a forgiving easygoing not to fast but definately not to slow kind of boat. The boat has kept my curiosity going by wanting to try new ways to get more speed.
Motoring characterisitcs The jury is still out for this topic. I've use a combination of tiller and motor to steer the boat out from my marina and to dock the boat
Liveability There is no living quarters
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The boat was given to me
Other comments I can honestly tell you that she's a great boat! I've really learned alot and I know there's more to learn about her. My list of things to do now is, To install a roller furller for the jibsail. Make the bottom fare. Put a Topnotch paintjob on the topsides
