Review of the Oday 34 by mpraizner

Year built 1984
Location of boat Punta Gorda, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2016
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely YES!
Gear that's been added Boat has freezer/fridge, two solar panels, autopilot, GPS chart plotter, 16K BTU marine air cond., roller furling, bimini, dodger, TV....
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Overall size and layout is quite good.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Wish it had a swim platform or open transom like the 35. Its hard to get on and off the boat in open water. Also mine has not yet had main halyard led to the cockpit yet, so main must be raised from the mast.
Sailing characterisitcs Performance under sail is very good. The boat is quite forgiving and handles moderately heavy (20-25knots) winds easily. The boat easily maintains 5 knots with little effort and in 12-15 knot winds she can make 7+
Motoring characterisitcs The three blade prop bites hard, which makes backing a little tricky. Overall it motors really well and easily averages 5-6 knots at 2200 rpm
Liveability Great for two people and a dog or two. Fridge/Freezer, which is maintained by solar panels makes extended stays pretty nice.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) ODAY no longer in business.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Overall brokerage experience was good. Some brokerages use a separate document processing company. Make sure you are aware of what you are paying them for. Most of the things they offer you can do yourself and save hundreds of dollars. For example: USCG documentation is something you can apply for yourself.
Other comments I was originally looking for a much newer boat (1995-2000) and was surprised how modern the 80s model ODAY were. I am glad I took a chance at looking at these older models because I got what I wanted for half the price.
