Review of the Oday 34 by Chuck McQuaid

Owner bought the boat in 1982  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes  
Gear that's been added The usual -- electonics, sails, ect.  
Structural or complex improvements Changed alternator mounts per manufacturer recommendation. Replaced rubber high pressure oil return line with heavy duty reinforced version. (Lost engine in 1983 due to return line failure).  
The boat's best features By far the best ergonomics of any boat that I have been on or seen reviewed.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Oil return line (see above) Also fuse between starter button and starter solenoid failed due to corrosion -- did not know such a fuse existed!  
Sailing characterisitcs Fairly well balanced for cruiser of its time. In a good blow can do a reefed main and a working jib and make great time.  
Motoring characterisitcs Reverse took a while to get used to. Big time skid to starboard when getting started. Once I understood it could use it to my advantage. Think motor is slightly underpowered. Would hate to motor into fierce wind and seas for long.  
Liveability Excellent for Great Lakes. Very comfortable boat and easily sailed by two experienced sailors.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer was good at heart but made promises he could not keep.  
Other comments Best ergonomic design ever (reviewed in Sail magazine in 82 ro so). Construction could have been better (but as a mid-priced boat was good value).
