Review of the Oday 35 by Barry Lenoble

Year built 1986
Location of boat Mt. Sinai, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I have only owned this boat a short time, purchased late fall, 2006.
Gear that's been added The Previous Owner has set up the boat quite nicely with 2 burner propane stove and oven, Seafrost engine driven refrigeration, residential mattress in V Berth, some custom drawers, dodger, bimini, cockpit cushions, stern seats, all lines led aft.
Structural or complex improvements No structural improvements for me. I sail in primarily 5-15 kt winds, so nothing extra was required.
The boat's best features I bought the 35 over the 34 (and other comparable boats like Catalina 34, etc.) because of the swim platform. It's great for getting on / off from a dingy, swimming, etc. There is plenty of space below for a family of 5 to spend a weekend or longer.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Like most boats, it is difficult to get at the engine. The raw water intake thru-hull is in a terrible spot. I like to close it when I leave the boat and it is NOT easy to reach. My boat has a conventional stuffing box and it leaks. My bilge has water in it and I hate that! The stock winches are Barlow. They work fine, but there is only one company that makes parts for them, and they are in Australia. I have an older Hood furler and it is not smooth or easy to furl the sail.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails fine. I have the shoal keel, so my boat doesn't point very high. It does seem stable. It sails well in 10 kts of wind, moving upwind at 5 kts and reaching at 6 kts. I have the original 150 Neil Pride Genoa, and it's worn out. I hope that pointing improves with a new sail.
Motoring characterisitcs I have the stock Universal M 25 engine with 23 HP and a fixed 3 blade prop. Motoring performance is fine, but be prepared for a lot of prop walk in reverse.
Liveability So far the longer I spent on board was a weekend (with my wife and 4 kids). There was enough room for everyone. The head, fridge, water heater, etc. all made it very comfortable.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a broker and he was great to work with.
Other comments I will update this as I learn more about this boat.
