Review of the Oday 240 by Marc Chappell

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I am very happy with this boat.  
Gear that's been added The previous owner had a hand held compass. It did not work I have attached a mount for a GPS where the compass used to be.  
Structural or complex improvements I have not made any structural improvements.  
The boat's best features The shoal keel saved me from having to wait for the next high tide, several times. I follow channel markers out to San Francisco Bay. They are not as deep as they are supposed to be. The shoal keel makes it very easy to motor off the sand bars.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I would like to see a cat cleat for the jib sheet. I do not really like the standard cleat that comes with the boat.  
Sailing characterisitcs The shoal keel makes the boat heel more in less wind. The weather helm is pronounced. That is, the boatwill turn into the wind when healed over past a point. This is good, I guess.  
Motoring characterisitcs I have a short shaft Honda Four Stroke engine. It is a mixed blessing. The short shaft is nice when running into uncharted snad bars. It is not so nice in a tight turn in rough waters. The propeller can come out of the water. All in all, that problem is not too pronounced.  
Liveability It could be done. It would be ok for weekend trips for a family of four, I guess. We have not tried it yet.

The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker was fine. He suggested this boat over several others. We are very happy with it.  
Other comments My next boat may be an Oday.
