Review of the Oday 240 by Chris Shaw

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I'd echo Dan Boncher's review (from 2000) and have been very pleased with the design and layout of the 240. My family has enough headroom (5'6") and we have overnighted several times.  
Gear that's been added The Boncher's did a very nice job enhancing the running rigging. I've been focusing on making it more comfortable for weekending and potentially weeklong sailing adventures. I've added a 12v socket, Solar battery charger, 2 12v fans, a solar powered vent to keep cabin temps down and several storage bags that velcro to the carpeted sidewalls. I've also added many hooks in the lazerette to organize all of the spare lines.  
Structural or complex improvements While not specifically designed to fly a spinnaker, I've flown a large chute from an S2 with some success. The jib tracks needed to be lengthened to handle the 150 jib properly. I'd like to add more jam cleats to handle the extra spinnaker lines.  
The boat's best features Good balance of usable cabin space, cockpit size, and minimal draft that makes it a good cruiser and racer. With an auto-helm or tiller tamer and the furler it can be handled solo or with a single extra crew member.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mast head light socket on the deck has been difficult to get a good connection. The screws holding the table top to the frame loosened over time requiring replacement with threaded anchors and screws. The forward hatch glazing needed to be applied. The teak companionway hatch rails have split over time. Getting around the side stays when going forward is an unfortunate design tradeoff.  
Sailing characterisitcs I've been very pleased with most points of sail. It will sail at a 30 degree heel without much trouble, but 25 is much more comfortable. I was surprized to find the "groove" where the tiller require almost no pressure to maintain a tack.  
Motoring characterisitcs It's not bad for an outboard, but there are tacks where the lower unit drags in the water even when tilted up. Motoring on rolling starboard tack with any heeling will generate a lot of noise.  
Liveability It's ok for 2 or maybe 3. The private head with max headroom is a plus. Additional ventilation was needed to keep from overheating. May need to add a 12v block heater to overnight later into the season.
