Review of the Oday 240 by Nate Masopust

Year built 1990
Location of boat Southeastern CT
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely. It has suited my purposes very well.
Gear that's been added 15 HP 2 stroke Johnson/Evinrude long shaft, new depth sounder, new compass, 30' of chain and 100' of 3/8" anchor rode
Structural or complex improvements Rebuilt rudder, repaired compression post, custom installed gimballed two burner Origo 4000 over cooler space
The boat's best features Interior finishing on such an inexpensive boat, shoal draft without complexity of a centerboard or daggerboard system, cut-out in transom for outboard, port-lights
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Aft-most keel bolt leaked first time I lauched it. Some life caulk and well-placed o-rings have kept it from leaking again despite more than 1500 miles of sailing and several groundings.
Sailing characterisitcs Tender for the first several degrees of heel, then stiffens up at about 15 degrees. Decently balanced if you know how to trim your sails. Keep the main FLAT and use your traveler to steer the boat upwind and you'll sail much faster. Jib/Genoa is tough to trim well due to very wide single spreaders. The boat is beamy, but if you study the water-line shape of the hull, it is actually quite narrow with nicely rounded chines. She sails much faster than you would expect from such a small waterline length.
Motoring characterisitcs 15 HP is enough to move me at 4 knots over ground into a stiff breeze and 3-4' waves. Could easily get away with 8-10 HP. Get the longest shaft motor you can find.
Liveability My girlfriend and I cruised this boat for two months around the Florida Keys and up the Intracoastal as far as Oriental, NC. The shallow draft and relatively large accommodations (for it's size) made it the perfect boat for a couple to cruise the ICW on. We have lived for a week on the 240 at Block Island and made several weekend-plus cruises in the L.I. Sound. 2 couples is the most we've fed/slept aboard. This was alright, but we are good friends. 2-3 people or 2 adults and 2 kids would be more easy than 2 couples.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker. Bought her as-is and put many boat bucks into her readying the trailer, rig, galley and all the other things that make a neglected sailboat go again.
Other comments Great boat. I will buy a performance boat next because we don't need the space any more. Preferably one that can point higher than 40 degrees when it's wavy and more than 12 knots of breeze. For cruising and beginning sailors, this is one of the best used boats available.
