Review of the Oday 240 by John Allen

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? It is a great boat, but after sailing it in the Delaware river for a year now, I've come to the conclusion that for my type of sailing a fractional rig would be better suited. If I was in more open water, a large lake, large bay, then definately. I love the boat, the way it handles and sails. But I tack too much to make use of a 130% genoa. It takes the fun out of cruising for the family.  
Gear that's been added New 130% Genoa, New Running Rigging, New VHF, Garmin 440s GPS/ChartPlotter, Harken 3:1 Mainsheet Traveler, New VC-17 bottom paint.  
Structural or complex improvements No.  
The boat's best features It is easily sailed and manuevered short handed. It is very forgiving. Easy to dock (light is good). Spacious accomadations below.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Material seem to be good quality for 20 years old. I did need to rebed the forward hatch. It came out easy and went back in very easy. No more leaking.  
Sailing characterisitcs I am still learning, but I think it sails very well. I can't point as high as other boats with a deep fin upwind, but I do pretty well off the wind. With proper sail trim the helm is well balanced in most conditions.  
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 9.9 2 cycle outboard. I use it as little as possible. But don't have any issues with the operaion of it.  
Liveability It's like camping in a tent overnight, with a portapotty. I've overnighted once with my 6 year old. It was fun.
