Review of the Oday 272 by Mark St. Pierre

Year built 1986
Location of boat Western South Dakota
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I have a Potter 19 I had built for me, but wanted a boat to take an extended trip to the Carribean, in a couple of years. We have only used the boat on a lake but it won the summer race series, something we could never do in a Potter. We love the boat. We bought it for its size and room inside, grandkids love it too. We did not know how it sailed or if was fast. It sails like a dream, it is fast and I'd take her anywhere, and hope to do so!
Gear that's been added No, but will add some cam locks to back up the spinlocks particularly on the main sheet. Eventually will add a dodger an bimini, and a tiller outboart stick so that both move together. Will add Depth finder and good compas. She came as she was from the factory. She is Hull Number 2 and was never named. Maybe install inboard. She is in excellent shape and trailers quite easily. Friends in boat club are green with envy! We had nine for dinner one night in her cabin.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features She'll turn on a dime, very stable, points well and sails well in light breeze or a blow. We won races on "no wind" and races at 2o knts.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Spinlock handles broke, and so did winch handles. The probably have been with boat since it was built. We did this damage during a race in high winds, shortly after we purchased her.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails mvery well. We were told before we bought her that the 272 does not point well. She points just fine. Sails in a light breeze, but loves to sail in a 15 to 20 knt breeze, that's about the moist we've had her out in. Since we've only had her a short time have only had to reef the main once.
Motoring characterisitcs She came with a 9.9 Yamaha, which pushes her along quite well. It also provides a battery charger. I've hit the rudder with the motor a number of times and will buy a rod that connects the rudder and outboard so they swing together to prevent this problem next season.
Liveability > She's expansive for a 27. I recently sailed to Europe on a 35 footer and she has almost as much uesable pace. I would make the salon seat back cushions removable or thinner as they make the settees a little narrow as bunks. We'll probably get denser cusions at some point. May add a two brner gimbaled stove, but currently use an inexpensive propane camp stove.
