Review of the Oday Javelin by Curtis Bosket

Year built 1980
Location of boat Sylvania, OH
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. When we bought this boat I knew next to nothing about sailing. However, this was an excellent boat to learn on.
Gear that's been added No
Structural or complex improvements Re-cabled and refinished the centerboard only.
The boat's best features The Javelin is an excellent learning platform due to it's stability and handling. It's also very comfortable for up to 4 adults, considering that it's only 14-feet. A very sturdy boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only real problem was having to replace the center board due to a frayed cable, however this was not a design issue. Other than that, in the "I really messed up" category, I slipped once while stepping the mast and the bottom end popped a hole in the forward deck.
Sailing characterisitcs Stable, but a quick little boat which is a lot of fun to sail. In a stout breeze you get a good workout and get a real feel for sailing.
Motoring characterisitcs No motor
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments I would recommend a Javelin to new sailors such as I was, or to anyone who wants a great day sail boat.
