Review of the Oday 302 by henry

Owner bought the boat in 2004  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes we are very pleased with the boat.We've sail a Cape Dory 25 for three years just to see if we liked sailing.Well it turns out that we love sailing so much that we needed a bigger boat.But a shallow draft was needed. And the Oday 302 with a wing keel was perfect for our channel.  
Gear that's been added A battery charger,we anchor alot. So went we come to the marina we felt we should be able to charge the batteries And a bigger anchor.  
Structural or complex improvements No,but I will be putting a back splash for the galley up.  
The boat's best features Roomy we had five people over for breakfest and I did not feel crowded.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. This has not given me problems yet but a sail company rep. Has warned me not to sock down the mainsheet because the boom will snap.Never use a winch on it.  
Sailing characterisitcs We sail long island sound out of Clinton,Ct.We love to sail every weekend.The best sail so far was in med.wind 15-25knts. The 302 handled great Sailed across to Mattituck L.I. Ny.In 2 1/2 hours. Normally on the Cape Dory this would have taken us 4-6 hrs.My wife was not used to the 302 and was not sure what the 302 could handle.The 302 handled better than I dreamed,she took the 6-8 foot waves like a champ. And the helm had a good feel to it.  
Motoring characterisitcs Now the yanmar 18 shakes alittle .I had our marina mech. look at it and he told me that it's fine that the 18 yanmar shakes alittle at low rpm's. With his blessing we set out for (what I call the African Queen ride)its 45 min.ride to where we rise our sails.The engine is fine and I actualy dock better than I used to with Cape Dory.  
Liveability My wife and I stay aboard from friday to Monday morning.We used to stay on the Cape Dory only Saturday night.Now that we could both sleep in v berth together(could never do that on Cape Dory)And stand up in the cabin it's a dream come true.
