Review of the Oday 302 by Darrell Sawyer

Year built 1987
Location of boat Hartlepool UK
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2008
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, a bit concerned initially as very light (like most new boats) but its not a problem.
Gear that's been added Converted to 230v with new charger and water heater, the fridge works ok on 12v (no good on 230 with transformer to 110v as we only use 50Htz and the min spec is 59Htz). Replaced VHF with DSC and added chart plotter. Also installed a new cooker/oven as we spend many weekends on board.
Structural or complex improvements Resized cupboard under original two burner cooker to enable a gibbled oven/cooker to be installed. Hope to replace all cupboard doors for teak.
The boat's best features Very fast, shallow draught, roomy with two double cabins and modern layout for year built.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Had to replace micro switch on domestic water pump, which on a cheaper pump would not have been possible (or is that just us in the UK being a throw away society)?
Sailing characterisitcs I have only had the yacht for one (dismal) season and still learning how to sail her, that said have enjoyed every minute. Been caught out once in 30mph plus winds and found will not head in to wind on only fully reefed main only vast improvement with even a tiny amount of fore sail out. With a following big sea, the stern gets pushed about a bit, this is to be expected with the small keel.
Motoring characterisitcs The keel does allow for great turning under power in tight mainas and reverses well with no kick on the wheel. Engine is very quite on deck (hard to tell its started) everyone has commented on this point.
Liveability My only gripe would be, more locker storage please. We have to store the dingy on the deck (which is already quite high) and there is no wet locker. these issues are bearable when compared to the living space provided.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We purchsed Shadawbar direct with previous owner (Mike Wannell) who we found be a very nice person and extremely helpfull. The entire experience was enjoyable and I wish both Mike and Sam good sailing on there new ODay 322.
