Review of the Oday 19 by Jim Miller

Year built 1980
Location of boat Idaho
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definently. This was our first boat... It is extremely stable in the water (according to people who have sailed other boats of similar size). While somewhat small for a family of four to sail around on (It will work for day sailing, or sailing to a camp site for a weekend).
Gear that's been added Not yet, having just purchased it this past fall. We plan to add GPS, Radio, possibly rails around the cockpit and around the front.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Stability, large cockpit
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Our boat had been sitting at a dock unused for 8 years, and has a few issues... We will usually get a small amount of water on the cabin floor everytime we sail. The last time, we raised the keel to bring it to shore, and when we got back, discovered about 3 inches of water. I believe its due to the fitting in the cabin where the rope to raise the keel runs through. It is probably brittle, and has cracked.
Sailing characterisitcs New to sailing... My first time out was rather horrifying, due to my own ignorance (Left the boom secured as we raised the main). The one time we went out with an experienced person, it was great. Hoping to get alot more good weekends in this year!
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring is great, especially for a non-experienced sailor like me. The boat handles great.
Liveability 19 foot.... c'mon.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments We've had a great time on it so far. As I said, for a family of four, its small, but for a 2-3 people, it would be great... or for a couple to weekend on!
