Review of the Oday 19 by Tim

Year built 1979
Location of boat S.Orleans Cape Cod, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1979
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. This is an excellent stable and forgiving vessel in the shoal-draft daysailor class with accomadations for weekending. (This was the third O'day 19 ever built)
Gear that's been added Outfitting has been limited to basic equipment such as a porta-potti, a clinometer, VHF, 8 horse yamaha kicker, windex, swim ladder, boom tent and Lewmar centerboard winch (boat was sailed by grandparents who often struggled with the CB). It will be getting a roller furling jib
Structural or complex improvements None yet, I will be upgrading the 12V electrical system, turnbuckles, chainplates and cleats.
The boat's best features Simplicity of design, stability and predictable upwind sailing characteristics
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. centerboard has had a history of getting stuck in it's trunk. Would have liked to see more transom support. Lacks an aft quarter berth. Also would like to have seen a bow rail and lifelines extending aft to the outboard shroud.
Sailing characterisitcs as mentioned before, predictable upwind with a controlable amount of weather helm and surprisingly quick off the wind.
Motoring characterisitcs excellent tracking foward and reverse (for an outboard) easily achieves hull speed with 3/4 throttle of the 8 horse yamaha
Liveability well, its under 19' so you have to deal with some limitations. However, despite the gigantic cockpit, accommidations below are adequite for two weekenders with plenty of room for a one burner stove, portable head and small water tank. The V berth is quite large with ample stowage underneath.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Great boat, I grew up with it so there are a lot of memories here :)
