Review of the Oday 222 by Christophe

Year built 1986
Location of boat now in Tennessee
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely.
Gear that's been added I spent a wad tricking this one out and then selling her because we finally got a slip. I added: -a bridgedeck padeye for the mainsheet (instead of the silly backstay arrangment) -full battened mainsail -CDI roller furling and a new 150% genoa -All new rigging -Assymetrical cruising spinnaker with sock -new harken 8 winches on the coamings -new genoa tracks -mast raising system -alot more too
Structural or complex improvements I mentioned the padeye on the bridgedeck. This improved the performance of the boat immensely. If you own one, make sure you do this and add a boom bail at the seven foot mark on your boom (from the mast aft). You will thank me later. Also, the original furling from scheafer DOES work. You most likely need to add a new line for the little furler.
The boat's best features I would say its finish. This is probably the nicest 22 footer Ive seen. Ours was in true mint condition. I have to credit the previous owners for this as I only owned her for a year and a half. I bought it in showroom condition. I am a true believer in the keel centerboard configuration for trailerables. keep the weight as low a possible. The layout is also first rate. It makes good use of that space available.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I am not wild about the fact that it doesnt have a stern rail. Otherwise, the original mainsail from neil Pryde was cut with too much draft by design. This is apparently a problem with alot of Oday sails. Adding a new main gave my 222 a whole new appetite for speed and performance.
Sailing characterisitcs I like the fact that she will sail in the lightest of winds. Also the shoal draft is nice while still affording some stability and pointing ability
Motoring characterisitcs I had a Honda 9.9 four stroke which pulled me off a sandbar late on summer evening. It was ALOT of power for this boat. I then traded down to a Honda 5 four stroke which was much more suited to this boat. Hull speed was no problem. She manuevered very well and would turn on a dime.
Liveability Well, its a 22 footer so lets be reasonable. The v berth is huge (easily sleeps a couple). Settees are nice and deep and you dont crack your head on the side decks when you sit down (like on other 22 footers). Stowage is excellent with a quarter berth on each side. Galley is useful with pressure water and a deep sink on the centerline. recess for a stove is also well thought out.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought it from a private party on the west coast and pulled her home to MN. She was well worth it.
Other comments I think this boat is superior to a Catalina 22 in alot of ways. There are backing plates on all hardware and I had no stress cracks or crazing anywhere. Also reasonably sized for a trailerable. One strong person CAN raise the mast with the right system safely. Truly a first rate boat. Well worth the premium it commands. If you found this review, you either own one of these marvelous boats or are thinking about it....look closely at this one, its a winner.
