Review of the Oday 22 by John King

Year built 1978
Location of boat Weqetequock, CT
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 99
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would. I had never sailed before, I got a few books from the library, studied them and went sailing.Got a fixer upper o'day 22, started out afraid to raise the jib, now I leave the genny up till the rail is burried. I've hit rocks, run aground, goose-wing jibed, jumped overboard in november to push off sandbars,in otherwords I've had a blast! I think of getting a bigger boat from time to time, but drawing 2.5 feet of water comes in handy at times! It hasn't killed me yet, and it's been very forgiving of my poor skill and judgement.
Gear that's been added I added a boarding ladder and tiller tamer I ran the halyards to the cockpit I also added a mast fixture and made a pole to wing out my genny
Structural or complex improvements not yet
The boat's best features Her forgiving nature, solid shoal draft keel
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. the tiller broke when my boat washed ashore last december, but I can't blame design for that!
Sailing characterisitcs seems to have a lot of weather helm in stiff wind, and will come up in a broach in a gust, but it always recovers ok, and it's better if i reduce sail by reefing the main
Motoring characterisitcs works fine with 5 horse honda
Liveability I am over six feet and 220 lbs, It's ok to sleep on but tough to get around inside
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments terrific, stable boat, Block Island this year!
