Review of the Oday 23 by Brian

Year built 1978
Location of boat Eastern CT (latest)
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1981
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes; I just sold it to move up; family is bigger now and we need more room.
Gear that's been added Stern pulpit, knot meter, VHF radio, AM/FM/Cassette, BBQ, replaced 2-burner alcohol stove with 1 burner butane unit.
Structural or complex improvements Shelf in hanging locker rotted; removed it and locker holds hanging items better. Cockpit drain fitting cracked at threads causing delamination in stern which was corrected.
The boat's best features Shallow draft, ease of lowering mast with just one additional crew (needed to pass under fixed bridge at Shinnecock Canal), anchor locker, lazarette (cavernous), large cockpit, lots of room below - especially settee that converts to double and fold-down table.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs Good all-around boat. Bought a used Etchells 22 genoa and spinnaker. The gennie, alone, made upwind sailing in strong wind more comfortable than reefed main and jib. Spinnaker greatly aided downwind performance in light air.
Motoring characterisitcs Had 9.5hp outboard - motored fine and ability to turn engine meant it could turn on a dime!
Liveability We frequently used the double settee in the main salon rather than the v-berth and found it quite satisfactory as a couple. Better ventilation than using the v-berth. Retractable galley and fold-up table provided lots of room in cabin. However, with all in use it was quite tight. Obviously, sitting headroom only.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments My wife and I sailed this boat for up to ten days at a time on vacation. For the two of us, it was very workable. We found the cockpit and the cabin settee very comfortable to relax in while underway, nestled in the leeward side. Lot's of great memories.
