Review of the Oday 30 by David Tees

Year built 1984
Location of boat saint John, New Brunswick
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes I would.I find it an almost ideal boat for the area that I sail.I wanted a boat that I could cruise for a few days up the river with the kids as well as race in local regattas.i also wanted a boat that I could comfortably take along the coast. My wife wanted hot water and I really like the interior layout.
Gear that's been added The boat came very well equipped with GPS,Radar,VHF radio, depth, speed, log, fish finder, dodger and bimini,as well as a cruising spinnaker and sock.I added a simrad 30 autohelm.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features The interior layout and volume are this boats best features. It seems well made and excellent value. It is quiet heavy which make it very solid in heavier seas.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I 've had a couple of cabin leaks which are quite minor but one around a stanchion is difficult to fix as the bolts are under the liner and not accessable easily. There has been a odor from the holding tank which has defied fix up to the this point. The ice box is not well insulated nor the engine room. This is to be fixed this year.
Sailing characterisitcs It points well and quiet fast up wind but slow downwind. It likes lotsa wind.It would be very hard to wet the rail.It steers well and seems to have adequate rudder.I would like the boat more if it was abit faster but everything is a compromise and it is certainly one I can live with.
Motoring characterisitcs It motors well at 5.5 knots but as mentioned it is noisy. It maxes out at 6.3 knots.
Liveability It great for extended weekends but certainly not for live aboard. However it depends on how much you like to rough it.Dropping the table down every night to get a double bed is abit of a pain. But this inconvenience isn't worth 20000$ to fix!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boats from Great Island Boat yard in Maine. The boat was ready on time and set for sailing along the coast to it's new home.
Other comments I think the Odays are great value in the used market.I've looked at larger boats but prefer mine due to the very functional layout for it's size. After all problems do go away if you throw lotsa money at them.
