Review of the Oday Mariner by Dave Conley

Year built 1974
Location of boat Fair Hzven, NJ
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, indeed. Besides a bargain (bought boat, trailer, 4hp OB, two mast and booms (which came in very handy after loosing first mast last year) for $1200, it's a size I can handle alone, but with room for company should they wish to go. Love this boat!! I'm new to sailing, so not too knowledgeable regarding other boats, but the couple others we sailed in (at the class I took thru the River Rate club I belong to) made me think that the Mariner is a pretty good overall boat for what I want to do.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements Still using what I bought as is.
The boat's best features The cabin is great for storing gear - hope to use it to sleep in someday, as an overnighter out to Horsehoe Cove on Sandy Hook. Also, the cockpit is nice an long, can hold 3 or 4 probably, altho 3 is the most we've gone out with (me and two kids).
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. nothikng
Sailing characterisitcs Got scared out of my mind one weekend in a strong wind, with gusts, when I had not learned to NOT CLEAT the main sheet. Boat broached, thought we were going over, but it didn't. Have since learned not to cleat the main sheet and haven't had to head in to change undies. Having lost the first mast at the morring from my ignorance about rigging, I am kind of paranoid about losing it again. But had some help from one of the sailing instructors and think the rigging is up to snuff now for most anything. Working up to things slowly.
Motoring characterisitcs Handles well with the 4 hp outboard that came with it, altho this year the motor poopped out (doesn't go into gear again) so have been sailing with sails only.
Liveability Haven't tried it yet, but think it will do for an overnighter. Let you know next year, I hope.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from an individual so can't comment on brokers or dealers. Individual was great - upfront with everything.
Other comments Boat has survived my first years. Should have seen the first attempt at returning to the mooring under sail only - talk about bumpin boats. Glad there weren't any witnesses. A terrific vessel, in this ignorant opinion.
