Review of the Oday 192 by John Sims

Year built 1986
Location of boat Pensacola, Fl
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It is comforting to know that all parts for the boat are still available and will be for the forseeable future.
Gear that's been added Bimini, Boom Vang, Schaefer Snap Furl and 135% Jib, Swim Ladder
Structural or complex improvements No. The boat seems very well made structurally.
The boat's best features It has good looks, reasonably stable and fast, very forgiving and easy to sail. Reef the main and she will take 20 kt winds with ease. I believe the fixed keel/CB combo is the best compromise for a trailerable sailboat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. In my opinion, the little jib furler that came with the boat is inadequate and should be replaced. With this unit the jib is freestanding and it is impossible to get enough tension on it to get the boat to point properly. Also, it tends to jam when you need it most (impending storm and winds gusting). If nothing else I would have converted to standard hank on jib with leads to the cockpit. I replaced mine with a Schaefer Snap Furl unit and I am very happy with it.
Sailing characterisitcs It is very easy to sail, not a racer but resonably fast and stable. I have never had the feeling of losing control and I sail almost exclusively solo.
Motoring characterisitcs My 6 h.p. Suzuki pushes it to hull speed at about half throttle. 4 h.p. is probably adequate and any more than 6 would be too heavy and wasted h.p.
Liveability The boat was designed and marketed as a "Weekender" and for 2 adults and maybe a small child or two it will do very well. It has a large cockpit and is excellent for daysailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A - bought used.
