Review of the Oday 192 by John Balber

Owner bought the boat in 1993  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I've been very happy with my boat. I would like to have more cabin room, but you always want more room. I've named her DAYDREAM.  
Gear that's been added I have added a CDI roller furler, a new jib, a compass and a depth sounder.  
Structural or complex improvements I have run all lines to the cockpit and have moved the winch from the mast to the cabin top.I have modified the kick-up rudder line, since it has hung up so many times. I have modified the reefing system and run lines to the cockpit.  
The boat's best features It's a tough little boat, solid and well built.It seems to be more boat than it's competitors. It has just enough teak to be classy, but not too much to be a maintenance nightmare. It's fun to sail.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The Schaefer furling unit that comes standard is dangerous. It jams in moderate winds and it is a pain and scary to go to the bow to take in the jib halyard. The line that's used to lock the rudder in place often wedges itself between the two plates that connects the rudder with the tiller. The swim ladder needs more substantial backing  
Sailing characterisitcs It sails well in light and moderate winds. It will sail nicely in 20 knot winds with one tuck in the main and 1/2 of the jib exposed. I've owned her for 9 years and have been very happy with her. I see no need to get anything bigger. I can sail rings around my friends Catalina 22.  
Motoring characterisitcs I have a 5hp Honda outboard that will take her to hull speed. I only motor to leave and return to my slip.  
Liveability It's a great weekender for one, crowded for two. If you take two fiends with you for the weekend, they will no longer be your friends.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought my boat from a private party. It had only been sailed a dozen times. It was for all practical purposes a new-used boat.  
Other comments Get rid of the schaefer furling unit and you have a fine boat
