Review of the Oday 222 by David Clark

Year built 1985
Location of boat Wisconsin
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We love the lines on this boat. It's one of the nicest 22 footers on the water.
Gear that's been added Boom vang, long shaft motor, standing rigging and lifelines (this year), reconfigured the trailer from rollers to bunks.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features I find it pretty stable in heavier winds as long as you have adequately reefed. Easily trailered. Setup and take down is easy. No problems with leaks.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Motor mount is a bit flimsy. Original roller furling unit needs replacement. A few popouts on the topside decks.
Sailing characterisitcs It does round up easily if overpowered. I don't think it is as tender as some newer boats in this size range. Lots of fun in 10-15 knots. The kids love to get it to heel.
Motoring characterisitcs I used to have a 9.9 Johnson short shaft and it moved the boat quite well (4-5 knots), even in a stiff breeze. Since I wanted to do a bit of sailing on Lake Michigan, I switched to an Evanrude 7.5 long shaft. No apparent loss of speed.
Liveability It's fine for two adults (not real big adults) and two kids on an overnighter, but much more than that would be a bit tight.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from private owner.
Other comments This is a great starter boat. It's great for single handing since most lines come aft. It is stable enough in a stiff breeze (15-20 knots)not to scare the bejabbers out of everyone. It's a nice size for smaller inland lakes, but its big enough to do a little tooling around on the Great Lakes. Easy to trailer with a moderate sized vehicle (6 cyl. Jeep Cherokee).
