Review of the Oday 27 by Franz Azuolas

Year built 1976
Location of boat Barnegat Bay ( New Jersey)
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! I think it is just right for me and my family. The size and design work well. I sail with a friend in a 28 ft Oday which is significantly larger - but it would be too much boat for my daysailing style. The 27 footer is strong, stable and roomy!
Gear that's been added No- I will be adding a second battery and shore power.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features The way it handles in stiff winds- a very secure feeling -
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Only has one battery- and no shore power- my bilge pump runs the battery down so it is hard to start the engine. If I disconnect the bilge pump - I have no problems. Just can not leave the boat for more than a week- bilge gets water from the shaft seal. My depth meter and knot meter did not work last season - I hope to diagnose and correct this year.
Sailing characterisitcs I am in the learning phase and a roller furler for the jib sure would make it easier. My crew ??? lacks confidence and that creates some problems when there really aren't any. It is NOT set up for singlehanded sailing. Requires two.
Motoring characterisitcs My Atomic 4 has a small amount of vibration that I did not expect- otherwise a strong and reliable motor. Relatively quiet and pushes the boat well.
Liveability We have not "camped out" on the boat - still trying to talk my wife and two boys into trying it. Seems it might be a little tight for 4 people. But with the ice box, stove top and relatively large beds- it should work well.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it from a young sailor for a very good price. It was in excellent shape.
Other comments I'm glad that the Oday has a strong following - all the internet sites really help!
