Review of the Oday 28 by Dave Medeiros

Year built 1984
Location of boat New Bedford, Massachusetts
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1984
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? It has been the perfect boat without defect.
Gear that's been added Single Burner Gimbled Stove, Gas Grille, Autopilot, Radar, Electronics, Alternator 90amp, third emergency only panel/battery system, Second engine monitoring/starting system w/ oil temp/press. Gauges
Structural or complex improvements Radar Mast Stbd Aft mounted antenna. Cut access door in cockpit (14"x18" access to transom hoses) All (engine, exhaust, bilge, thru hulls, sanitary, fresh water) rubber hoses were replaced this year.
The boat's best features Factory installed refrigeration system has worked without failure, Hotwater tank is original in not leaking at this time.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mast boot has always leaked and continues to leak. Every effort has failed to prevent water from entering the cabin at the deck connections. The engine comparment will increase in temperature after the first 10 hours of operation.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails fair into the wind, okay down wind. A solid 5 kt boat in most conditions!
Motoring characterisitcs 0.33GHP at 5kts M12 Universal Diesel. Noisy, smooth running, easy to start, never smokes, engine after 1,700 hours. Disassemble revealed the engine to be in new condition on the interior three years ago. The heat exchange was increased in size last year to overcome an increase in oil temp. at full loads.
Liveability Seven days continuous is our longest cruise. It is a good weekend boat!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) [builder]
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We are the original owners.
Other comments The 28 Oday is a safe coastal cruising sailboat. It capable of handling ocean waves better than I am. Waves have filled the cockpit to our knees without incident. Our boat is in the same condition as the day we took delivery in spring 1995.
